public toilets in Nice

Nice public toilets? Oui! Oui!

In Informationby bpnaughton2 Comments

It’s not the most exciting topic to read about, but you’ll be happy to know where public toilets in Nice are if you’re walking around all day. Unlike most places in the United States and a lot of other countries, public toilets are usually not free in France. Some department stores and electronic stores charge for their toilets, too, so you won’t necessarily save any money by popping into one of those businesses.

The benefit of having to pay is that the toilets tend to be clean, modern, and well maintained.

Here’s a high-level map letting you know the general area in which each toilet is located. The numbers on the map correspond to the numbers below in this blog. Each description below provides a close-up view of the toilet’s location so you can find it more readily.

List of the public toilets, arranged by area

The following is a list of all of the public toilets I’ve come across in the main shopping and tourist areas of Nice. I’ve broken down the list into very general geographic areas to make it easier to figure out which one is closest to you.

Promenade du Paillon & Jardin Albert I

These are the two main sections to the long, narrow park that bisects the city. Promenade du Paillon is east of Place Massena and Jardin Albert I is west of it.

1. Fontaine des Trois Grâces (Fountain of the Three Graces)

There’s a toilet under the Fontaine des Trois Grâces (Fountain of the Three Graces) in the Jardin Albert I (Albert the First Garden). This is at the far western end of the park, past the huge curved steel sculpture, almost as far as Le Méridien Hotel.

Avenue Jean Médecin

This is the main shopping street that the tram runs up. One end of the avenue is at Place Massena and the other is at Nice Ville train station. The toilets below are listed in order as you head north.

6. Below Place Massena

Open 9:00am to 6:30pm. Not open Sundays, holidays, or when events are taking place above in Place Massena. 50 cents.

There are three stairwells that lead to the underground shopping gallery that contains the toilets. One entrance, shown below, is on the Place Massena side of Galeries Lafayette department store.

Another is in the same position on the opposite side of the tram line. The third is on the other side of Rue Massena, very close to the second.

7. Galleries Lafayette Department Store

  1. Hopeless without a map. While this site is well intentioned, street names mean nothing.
